As part of the Supply Chain Tech Show in Chicago I had the opportunity to sit down for a brief interview with Professor Erick C. Jones of the University of Texas, Arlington. Jones focuses on industrial, manufacturing and systems engineering topics within the supply chain industry and is the program advisor for the Masters of Science Logistics Program at the University. In the interview, we cover the topics of current challenges within the industry, the impact of the Internet of Things on logistics processes and Jones also provides some advice for anybody thinking about getting involved or advancing their skills within the supply chain industry. Quotes to note from the Interview
On current industry challenges:
“Who owns what, when and where?…Now the customer doesn’t just demand that you deliver it on time; they want to know where it is at in the supply chain.” Traceability!
“Historically…the retailer could say ‘this is what the product is’. Now we have an interesting trend in the world where people say ‘here is a product…that is the base…but I want to add something to it.’” Customization!
Advice for current and future supply chain and logistics professionals:
“Don’t be static! The world is moving so fast. Taking at least one or two certifications per year is going to be necessary to attain high-end jobs, maintain the jobs you have and also create new innovations.” Education and Innovation!
