The Final Wrap-up of 2020 for the ATSC Blog – It’s award time!

I know this has been said and written before, but 2020 surely was a very crazy year with a lot of downs and a few ups. It is safe to say: It can only get better from here!  One surprising thing for 2020 is that the performance of the All Things Supply Chain Blog seems to be unaffected by the pandemic, with more than 30% growth in readers compared to last year.

But maybe this is not so surprising at all, with all the world forced to work from home and being more dependent on online sources.

So, at the end of 2020, we are not only looking back at all the hardships that this year forced on all of us, but also at more articles than we published ever before in a year, and which were read by a growing audience of supply chain management and logistic professionals. I hope we inspired a lot of people out there with new ideas to implement in their businesses or at least entertained them in a very difficult time.

At the All Things Supply Chain Blog reading is also voting, so now, without further ado, I’d like to present to you the 2020 All Things Supply Chain Awards.

The ATSC Awards – highlights from 2020

Like in 2019, we are honoring the most read articles in the four following categories: Most read Guest Blogger, Most read new article, Most read Amazing Supply Chain story and Best all-time performer. The ranking in the different categories is based on an index, which incorporates the absolute viewer numbers as well as the publishing date, in order to value the performance over time and thus also giving freshly published articles a fair chance of winning.

Panic buying was a big phenomenon in the beginning of the pandemic and led to some curious scenes in supermarkets as well as empty shelves. Emilia points out that the supply chain undergoes two phases: the fast increase in demand followed by a fast decrease as demand is saturated. While people seem to have adapted to the situation as the pandemic goes on, this behavior repeats itself again and again with every government-prescribed shutdown, and thus may be an opportunity to learn from similar situations in the future.

Coca-Cola is one of the most popular brands of all-time and because of this it is not surprising that the global supply chain of this beverage with more than 1.9 billion servings per day is a huge task and truly amazing. While Luisa unfortunately does not reveal the well-kept secret of the recipe, she describes the ingredients of the supply chain success which made Coca-Cola a global player among other brands.

It is really astonishing that this article by Emilia and also the second ranked by Luisa jumped on this list off the cuff. For years we have seen some older articles perform so good that we could not imagine to have two new articles here from the start. But it also makes sense: Panic buying is a thing we all saw in the supermarkets this year and most of us probably had strong emotions about it. And Coca-Cola has this mystery recipe appeal which makes people want to findout more about it. I’m personally very curious if these articles will be in the ranks next year.

This was a very hard year for me personally: working from home and simultaneously watching and teaching the kids was a big challenge. Without the amazing team of writers, the continuing success of the blog would not have been possible. This year my thanks go out to:

• Alice Scott – for getting quickly adapted to the unusual situation of joining a new team during a pandemic, for taking most of the daily blog business off my shoulders and for her DIY neighbors being quiet during our video calls.
• Luisa Walendy – for making blog controlling much easier than last year and actually a lot of fun (at least for me!)
• Alexander Jatscha – for being an unstoppable idea machine and writing factory (apart from the ATSC)
• Emilia Ashton – for just “being” the blog in my absence for several months, for handling the transition from the office in Germany to working from home in the UK so smoothly, for connecting the blog to so many interesting new supply chain professionals and for writing so many well-received pieces this year. Apart from winning two ATSC Awards in 2020, Emilia also was awarded 3^rd place in the Supply Chain Brief MVP Awards 2020 with this article.
